Description
The kingfisher was chosen as Estonia’s Bird of the Year in 2014. The kingfisher is known as the Jewel of the Nordics because of the exotic and extraordiary colour of the feathers on its back. Flashing across winter’s dull black and white landscape, the kingfisher can often appear as an explosion of colour. In Estonia, the kingfisher is on the list of protected species. For much of the winter, most of the birds migrate to the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea or the Persian Gulf. In Estonia, the kingfisher’s traditional nesting sites can be found along the country’s southern and south-eastern rivers which have suitable sandstone outcrops. As the very name of the bird implies, the kingfisher is an excellent fisherman.
